Free State emerging as a renewable energy hub

South Africa’s renewable energy sector is entering a new phase of growth as rising electricity demand, increasing private sector investment and the expansion of energy wheeling create new opportunities for utility-scale renewable energy projects.

The Free State Province is rapidly emerging as one of the country’s key renewable energy regions. With strong solar resources, established electricity infrastructure and growing demand from commercial and industrial energy users, the province is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for large-scale clean energy investment.

Vrede Solar forms part of this new generation of renewable energy projects. Once operational, the 250 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) facility will help supply reliable, competitively priced renewable electricity to private commercial and industrial customers, contributing to South Africa’s energy security while supporting economic growth.

The project is also among the first in South Africa to introduce Renewable Energy Supply Agreements (RESAs)—an innovative alternative to traditional long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). RESAs provide customers with greater flexibility through shorter-term agreements, enabling businesses to access renewable electricity in a way that better aligns with their operational and commercial requirements.

Located in the Free State, Vrede Solar demonstrates how the province is well positioned to play a leading role in the country’s clean energy future. By combining favourable solar conditions with innovative energy supply models, projects such as Vrede Solar are helping to accelerate South Africa’s transition to a more resilient, affordable and sustainable electricity system.
